Put Arundhati Roy behind bar: Karma

For her pro-naxal statement

Raipur, June 05, 2010

Congress leader and staunch supporter of anti-naxal movement salva judum Mahendra Karma has demanded that the Centre and the state government should immediately put the self-proclaimed human activist Arundhati Roy in jail for her pro-naxal public statement. “It is really strange that if a common man will dare to give such comments, the government would quickly put him behind the bars under Public Security Act, but the people like Arundhatis barefacedly display their inclination towards the naxals and overtly challenge the democratic system,” Karma said.
Talking to Central Chronicle on Saturday, he further criticised Arundhati for labeling the ‘gun movement’ launched by the naxals as ‘public movement’. “The mass killings done by the naxals apparently indicates that they do not intend to safeguard the interest of tribals, but they actually wish to rule in an undemocratic manner,” he said.
Karma demanded from the government to take action against all those pro-naxals who are dwelling in the urban areas and were continuously increasing their network to support Maoists.
On salva judum, he said the campaign really put the naxals on back foot. “The Maoists had never anticipated that the tribals would stand against them. This public movement had pulled the attention of the people in the other parts of the country and globe as well, but currently it has slowed down,” Karma added.
When asked about the solution to uproot naxalism from the state, he said, “We will have to jointly take responsibility to save democracy. If we all are peace lovers, then we should unite and increase our strength. I believe that the ultimate solution to put an end on naxal menace is mass movement.”
When asked how effective is the training of jawans in the jungle warfare school based at Kanker, Karma said the dense forests of Bastar could only be accessed if the security personnel would become expert in guerilla war techniques for which they need advance training and more gadgets.
On proposal of Army deployment in the naxal-hit areas, Karma said, “Army is the last option. First we will have to make optimum use of our existing forces that are capable enough, but lack modern combative resources.”
