The RMC will test the quality of water in each ward after receiving complaints from residents of different locations about supply of dirty water. “We are committed to provide potable water to the people of Raipur and will send tankers in those areas where there are complaints about dirty water with foul smell,” assured Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak after she inspected Purani Basti (Banjari Mata ward) on Wednesday morning to see the water quality when she received complaints from the local residents that they were drinking polluted water.
Notably, the residents of Purani Basti along with their corporator Radhika Nagbhushan (Congress) had informed Nayak that they were not getting clean water for the past one month, but no action was taken to solve their problem. They had further informed that for the past two-three days, the water being supplied was clean, but carry foul smell. During her inspection along with municipal officials and president of Food, Public Health and Sanitation department Govind Mishra, Nayak too found that the water supplied in the area contain intolerable odour.
Nayak further learnt that owing to the polluted water, the Purani Basti area suddenly became prone to the water-borne diseases like diarrhoea, jaundice and cholera and many residents started complaining about similar symptoms. One Madhu Nishad from the locality caught cholera, but she quickly started treatment process and now she has been cured, informed the local residents.
Nayak said the RMC will test water quality in each ward taking samples from different places and checking leakage in pipelines.
Nayak said the municipal team would also check whether the drains in each wards had been constructed with proper gradient or not. She doubted that the drains in those areas where drain water get mixed with the municipal water were not constructed by the contractors according to the norms owing to which the problem prevailed. If such cases would be surfaced, the RMC would ensure that the relevant contractors make proper slope in the drains by bearing the entire cost, she said.
