The Congress on Tuesday said that the government’s undeclared ban on eye camps had completely cramped the programmes operated under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). “About 60 patients lost their eyesight after undergoing cataract operation in government sponsored eye camps in Balod, Kawardha and Rajnandgaon in
2011. But the government, instead of taking action against the guilty and improving the facilities, has stopped organising eye camps for the past couple of months,” said PCC chief spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi.
“For impoverished section, the eye camps under Centre’s National Blindness Control Programme (NBCP) under NRHM and state’s Netra Jyoti Mela are the most economical options for cataract operations. Now, with the government hesitating to organise eye camps, it seems large number of the poor would be devoid of timely eye treatment,” Trivedi said.
