BJP anti-farmer, not Centre: Congress

Raipur, July 18, 2012

Lashing out at BJP kisan morcha national president OP Dhangar for stating that paddy MSP hike by Centre is insufficient, the Congress on Wednesday said the party-led UPA government had always taken initiative for the farmers while the BJP, despite ruling the state for the second consecutive term, continued to frame anti-farmer policies.
“Dhangar should first see what is party is doing with the farmers for the past eight years. The BJP had announced that it will disburse Rs 270 paddy bonus to farmers in 2008 Assembly polls, but it refused to fulfill its promise,” said former PCC president Dhanendra Sahu and chief Congress spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi.

“The UPA government in its previous tenure had hiked the paddy MSP by Rs 450 in five years and in current tenure it has hike the paddy MSP by Rs 430 in four years. Ironically, the BJP terms the recent hike in paddy MSP unsatisfactory despite knowing that its own NDA government at Centre had hiked paddy MSP merely by Rs 60 in five years,” they said.
They said Dhangar should rather remind his government in the state to give Rs 3880 crore paddy bonus at the rate of Rs 270 since 2008 to the farmers and follow the Centre’s initiative by announcing release of pending paddy bonus amount.
“Dhangar should ask his government why the farmers are committing suicide in the state if its policies are in their favour. Besides, he must ask inquire from the Chief Minister how duplicate fertiliser manufacturing factory was being operated in the latter’s Assembly constituency,” they added.
“Dhangar must further seek explanation from the government regarding provision of substandard seeds to the farmers. Similarly, the farmers had to purchase urea and DAP at higher rates from black marketeers. Certainly the government is responsible for this but he is ignoring these facts,” they said.
