Congress succeeded in attracting youths: Chidambaram

Launches YC’s membership drive

Raipur, January 22, 2010

Congress is the only party in the country with which the young generation has shown interest to link while no other parties have charisma to attract them. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram expressed these words after launching the membership drive of youth Congress (YC) here at Congress Bhawan on Friday.
Terming the membership campaign historical, Chidambaram said, “Congress has received excellent response from the youth wherever it had launched this drive.” He informed that in Tamil Nadu, the party had joined 12 lakh youth and hoped similar response in Chhattisgarh too.
Chidambaram informed that the experiment to link young generation with Congress was initiated by party’s general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Punjab was the first state where the membership drive was launched getting overwhelming response.
On the occasion, Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise Arun Yadav appealed from the young party workers to take the opportunity of membership drive to link large number of youth across the state.
Taking a swipe at BJP regime and alleging that the law and order in the state had completely gone haywire in the past 6 years, Yadav said, “The BJP government has failed in curbing corruption and naxal menace.”
He also ridiculed those state governments, where Congress is not in power, for claiming the Union government’s schemes as their own and misleading people. “The Raman Singh-led BJP government is no more different from the other non-Congress state governments that have failed in fully utilising the funds given from the Centre for the benefit of the people,” he added.
On the occasion, Leader of the Opposition in Vidhan Sabha Ravindra Choubey, PCC President Dhanendra Sahu, party national secretary and state incharge Mirza Irshad Baig and Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak were also present.

When asked how Congress would convince youth to join it, the Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise Arun Yadav said, “We have always given importance to the young generation and you would see several youth leaders holding key posts in the party organisation as well as in the Union Ministry. I think, this is most positive message that we would be conveying to the youth across the state.”
Asked what role the Youth Congress would play in uprooting corruption prevailing in system, he said, “This is the reason we are appealing younger generation to come forward and join our party so that good people in politics would jointly eradicate several problems including corruption.”
Asked whether the state government had ever send any proposal to organise the fast growing heavy industries sector in Chhattisgarh, Yadav said, “By far we have not receive any such proposal but and if we will get any then we would surely respond positively to the government.”
