State government has asked the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) to divide the city into ten zones. A directive in this regard reached municipal office on Thursday.
The zones will be divided in proportion with the population. Presently, there are eight zones in RMC and the population in each zone is one lakh or above. According to the Municipal Corporation Act’s Section 48(A), the zones should be created in those municipal corporations which have population more than three lakh.
Already, Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak had indicated that that the RMC would have to create a couple of new zones as the population of the city has gone past ten lakhs. She had said that all the zones would be reshuffled and the new ones would be created according to the location of wards. The RMC had five zones during 1999 to 2004 after which three more zones were created on the basis of census 2001.
