SIT to probe into pesticide purchase scam
Raipur, March 19, 2010
Agriculture Minister Chandrashekhar Sahu on Friday announced in the Vidhan Sabha that the government would conduct a high-level probe into Rs two crore pesticide purchase scam in Ambikapur under National Food Security Mission Scheme (NFSMS). The issue was raised by Congress MLAs Dharmjeet Singh and Ramdev Ram through a call attention notice.
Sahu said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Joint Secretary level officer would inquire into the matter and stern action would be taken against the guilty officials.
Both the Congress MLAs alleged that in spite of no demand the pesticides worth crores of rupees under centrally-sponsored NFSMS was purchased and stocked. The former Deputy Director first purchased and stocked the pesticides at fifty percent grant and then after forcibly taking signature of the Rural Agricultural Development Officer, it was informed that all the pesticides were distributed to the farmers, the duo charged.
The duo further alleged that in spite of purchasing pesticides at fifty percent grant the officials claim that the entire fund had been spent on purchase. The officials deceived the government and stocked pesticides in godowns instead of distributing them to farmers and now they are throwing the pesticides fearing raids, they said.
Denying about any provision of pesticide purchase under NFSMS, Sahu said instead the pesticides were being stocked for distribution to the farmers according to the target. Considering the target of the particular region, the pesticides worth Rs 1.54 crore and Rs 64.18 lakh was stocked in past two fiscals, he said.
Sahu also denied the other allegations leveled by the Congress MLAs and said the farmers were constantly getting benefit of NFSMS. However, he said the department would conduct inquiry into the matter if any corruption prevailed in the pesticide purchase scam.
Sahu first announced that the Deputy Director GN Yadav would conduct probe into the matter but when the Opposition demanded that either the Divisional Commissioner or Vidhan Sabha committee should be appointed for the purpose, the minister agreed to constitute a SIT chaired by Joint Director level officer.
