Raipur, July 13, 2010

A brick kiln owner had illegally closed one of the public roads at Sarona that leads to trenching ground where the municipal dumps garbage collected from the city. After learning from the local residents that the kiln owner was not allowing the RMC trucks carrying garbage to pass through the road, Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak on Tuesday reached the spot found that the normal traffic in the road was obstructed through illegal barrier.
Rebuking the kiln owner Arjundas Bhawnani, Nayak directed him to quickly remove the impediments and admonished him of stern action on reiteration of such illicit act in future.
Bhawnani, whose brick kiln is located besides the trenching ground, informed Nayak that he had closed the road because he was apprehensive that the garbage would be dumped in his vacant plot. Nayak assured Bhawnani that the trucks would use his land only to reach the trenching ground.
When she inspected the surrounding areas of Sarona, she found that the garbage had been dumped on the main roads owing to which the nearby residents had to live in unhygienic conditions. The people informed Nayak that the stinking garbage and filth in the ambience had made the locality prone to contagious diseases.
Infuriated by the recklessness of the sanitation contractors, Nayak directed the contractors to lift all the garbage from the roadsides and to dump it in the specified trenching ground. She instructed the officials to take strong disciplinary action against those contractors and truck drivers who would be found guilty of dumping the litter in wrong place.
She asked the officials to tighten the noose on the contractors by keeping complete record of the trucks carrying garbage, daily mileage of the trucks, etc.
Nayak further asked instructed the health staff to distribute chlorine tablets in Sarona area and to make people aware about the water-borne diseases appealing them to drink boiled water. She said the wells and bore wells should also be disinfected.
