During RSU’s 16th convocation ceremony

77 scholars receive gold medals, 145 get PhD

Raipur, January 17, 2010
Chhattisgarh has got ample potential. There is no dearth of resources and talent in the state but the major impediment in its progress is lack of willpower. Still, Chhattisgarh has immense potential and it would certainly become the prominent state of the nation. The words were expressed by Governor ESL Narasimhan during the 16th convocation ceremony of Pt Ravishankar Shukla University (RSU) that held here at the varsity auditorium on Sunday.
In the ceremony, 145 students got PhD while 77 received gold medals for scoring top rank or highest marks in different examinations conducted by the RSU during academic session 2008-09.
Greeting the students who received gold medals and PhDs, Governor said it was undoubtedly a milestone in their lives but they had to travel a long distance during which many more milestones would be there to achieve.
Speaking about the chief guest of the function, the internationally acclaimed Radio astronomer Dr Govind Swarup, the Governor said the former was born star and was a role model for young generation. He said the varsity invited eight decade young Swarup to raise the energy level of the students and to fill them with enthusiasm and positive attitude.
Speaking on future of the state, the Governor said, “Although I would soon be taking charge as Governor of Andhra Pradesh but in spite of that I that Chhattisgarh would be on top slot of the states by 2020.” However, he said the path of progress goes through education which needed improvement in the state. “Without education, there will be no job opportunity and no productivity. This will result in fall of economy. Hence, main emphasise should be given on quality education in the state,” he added.
He also pointed out that three were many institutions that lacked basic infrastructure including scarce faculty bur are running different undergraduate and post graduate courses. “I would appeal to the parents to ensure that their children should avoid taking admission in such colleges. I would also appeal from the CM and the Higher Education Minister to close these colleges as they are bringing disgrace to the state,” said Governor.
He further appealed from the females, who outnumbered males in grabbing gold medals and in receiving PhD, not to waste their achievement merely by becoming housewives but to use their talent in contributing in India’s development.
He said teaching is not a profession that could be adopted as hobby but it requires heart and soul. He advised the government, vice-chancellors of different varsities of the state and educationists to make attempt in transforming each university into ‘centre of excellence’ for which the existing courses based on old curriculum needed to be changed according to the modern-day requirement. The Governor concluded his speech quoting American President Barack Obama’s famous line – ‘yes we can’.
The other distinguished persons present on the occasion were Leader of the Opposition in Vidhan Sabha Ravindra Choubey, PWD Minister Brijmohan Agrawal, urban Administration Minister Rajesh Munat, Higher Education Minister Hemchand Yadav, Mayor Kiranmayi Nayaka and veteran Congress Leader Vidya Charan Shukla.
