Contractual sanitary workers go on indefinite strike

Raipur, Aug 05, 2010

Over 2000 contractual sanitary workers of the RMC who had not received payments for the past couple of months went on indefinite strike from Thursday. When contacted, none of the relevant civic officials including RMC Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary was available over phone to confirm about the strike while Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak said she was not aware about it and added that the RMC had started releasing the pending payments of the workers since last week.
However, Mayor-in-Council (MiC) member and president of Food, Public Health and Sanitation department Govind Mishra said the reports of workers’ strike were merely rumours. “The Commissioner called upon a meeting of sanitary contractors today afternoon and assured them that the payments of the workers for May and June 2010 would be released in a day or two. So, when the demands of the sanitary workers has been fulfilled, why they will go on strike?” he asked.
Mishra further informed that the contractors had agreed to give in written that they would disburse the payments of the workers through cheque mode. The cheque payments will be done to avoid further controversy or allegation on this issue, he said.
When pointed out that the workers’ payments of March and April 2010 were also pending, Mishra said the Commissioner had assured that the contractors and the workers that all the pending payments of previous months would be released soon. Notably, the sanitary workers are facing tough time for the past four months due to delayed payments.
The corporators say that the civic administration should release the payments of the workers timely as the sanitary arrangements of their areas would completely collapse if they would go on strike.
