Mayor playing politics on govt’s water scheme: BJP corporators

Raipur, February 04, 2010

BJP corporators have severely condemned Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak for giving negative statement on state government’s Bhagirathi tap water scheme. “Mayor’s comment on government’s ambitious scheme is highly objectionable as it has been commenced for financially impoverished section of the society,” they said. The BJP corporators cautioned Nayak to refrain from playing party politics on public welfare schemes.
“The scheme has been launched with an aim to rid the poor families from queuing for water at public tap connections. This scheme will also minimise the wastage of water,” they said.
Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak had recently raised her doubts about the success of Bhagirathi tap water scheme while talking to the media persons. Terming the Rs 8 crore-project an extra burden to the municipal’s exchequer, Nayak had informed that the government had released only Rs one crore and is likely to give the remaining amount after completion of the project. Nayak had also expressed her concerns about Rs 303.64 crore water augmentation scheme and had raised doubts on its timely completion.
On the other hand, a day after Mayor’s statement on Bhagirathi tap water scheme, RMC Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary has claimed that the scheme was not defunct. Providing the latest figures regarding the scheme, Choudhary had informed that the RMC had completed the survey of 956 beneficiaries of 22 wards and aimed to provide at least 3000 connections in 2010.
Chief Minister Raman Singh had launched the Bhagirathi tap water scheme some four months back on September 10, 2009. Under the scheme, the poor dwelling in the slum areas of all civic bodies will get free tap water connection.
