RMC Speaker has no right to take officials’ meeting: Mayor

Raipur, January 20, 2010

A day after Speaker Sanjay Shrivastava called upon meeting of Raipur Municipal Corporation officials, Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak has taken strong objection on it. She said that it was not under the jurisdiction of the Speaker to call upon such type meetings.
As anticipated, the power clash between the Mayor and Speaker has begun and is likely to be intensified in the coming days. After assuming the office on Saturday, Shrivastava had taken a meeting of RMC officials on Tuesday. The meeting was reported to be an introductory one, but Shrivastava discussed on various factors with the officials apart from reviewing the ongoing municipal works. Taking exception on this meeting, Nayak hoped that Shrivastava would not repeat it in future.
Asked whether she would take any action against Speaker if he would conduct similar meeting in future, Nayak said instead of assuming about such hypothetical situations, she would react according to real situation.
Asked if the Speaker would wish to attend her meetings with the officers to give some suggestions or to know about the progress of the municipal works, Nayak said if Shrivastava would take permission from her, she would definitely allow him to attend the meetings but that would not be possible every time, especially when she would conduct highly confidential meetings.
After Shrivastava’s meeting, a couple of municipal officials had complained about it to Nayak and Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary and had reportedly raised their concerns that the RMC works would be hampered if both Mayor and the Speaker would make it a prestige issue to conduct meetings.
When contacted, the RMC Commissioner said according to municipal norms, the Speaker cannot call upon administrative meeting, however, introductory meetings are allowed. Meanwhile, the Speaker was not available for comment on this issue.
