With an aim to provide better irrigation facilities to the farmers, the state government has successfully dug about 175 tube wells in this fiscal against its target of total 1000 tube wells. The government had made a budget of Rs 8.75 crore to achieve this target. These tube wells will irrigate about 5000 hectares of crop area (12,500 acres) across the state. In the past nine years, the Water Resources Department (WRD) has dug about 1268 shallow tube wells in the state. These tube wells are irrigating 6340 hectares of crop area. The department’s officials informed that the WRD digs shallow tube wells for the farmers. Each of these tube wells are dug at the cost of Rs 50,000. Since, the government gives fifty percent subsidy to the farmers hence they have to pay only Rs 25,000 for the tube well.  However, the farmer has to incur other expenses like power connection required for the tube well, power bills and its maintenance cost. The WRD terms tube wells with water drawing capacity of 2000 gallon or more as successful while those below this capacity as failure and in latter case, the farmers have to incur only Rs 1000.
