Raipur Municipal Corporation Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary has said that the government’s Bhagirathi tap water scheme was not a failure. “This scheme is still existent and the rumour about its failure is absolutely wrong,” informed Choudhary.
“We have so far provided about 80 tap water connections to the people residing in slum areas of Sant Ramdas ward and Dr Ishwaricharan Shukla ward,” he added.
The RMC aims to provide at least 3000 tap water connections in 2010. ‘We have already conducted survey of 956 beneficiaries of 22 wards that indicates that this scheme has not failed,” Choudhary said.
The Bhagirathi tap water scheme was launched statewide by Chief Minister Raman Singh on September 10, 2009. Under the scheme, the poor dwelling in the slum areas of all civic bodies will get free tap water connection.
Informing about Rs 303.64 crore water augmentation scheme, Choudhary said, “Under this scheme, the construction works of 17 overhead tanks and a new filter plant in the outskirt of the city are in progress. Similarly, the 400 km pipeline laying work has also gained pace.”
Notably, Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak had raised her doubts about the success of Bhagirathi tap water scheme while talking to the media person on Tuesday. She was also not sure whether the water augmentation scheme would complete in its given timeframe.
