Govt curtailing Mayor’s powers: Rizvi

Raipur, February 27, 2010

The PCC spokesperson Iqbal Ahmed Rizvi has alleged that the government is deliberately curtailing Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak’s powers by allowing municipal Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary to take decisions on approval of hoardings and ATMs in the city. “The BJP-led government is violating RMC rules by shifting Nayak’s powers to Commissioner. This is also an attempt to disregard mayor’s reputation,” he said.
Rizvi further alleged that the government wanted to create clash-like situation between the mayor and Commissioner owing to which it had taken such decision. “The BJP also wants to protect those corrupt contractors who are close to former Mayor Sunil Soni. The BJP knows that Nayak would not brook corruption in the RMC due to which the government curtailed her powers,” he said.
Terming the government’s move illegal and interfering in RMC’s development works, Rizvi demanded from it to revoke its orders with an immediate effect.
“Why did government took such decision only when Congress mayor is in power? This indicates that Nayak’s victory in recently held civic polls is still rankling BJP,” he said.
