RMC commissioner informs to BJP corporators
Raipur, February 18:, 2010
The state government has asked the RMC to constitute new zones (ward committees) by February 28. The information was given by municipal Commissioner Om Prakash Choudhary to the BJP corporators when the latter approached him to inquire about the reasons for delay in constitution of new zones. Choudhary informed that the government gave new timeframe after the RMC administration had requested to extend the date of zone formation.
The BJP corporator Subhash Tiwari informed that confusion prevailed among all the newly elected corporators owing to delay in constitution of zones. “According to Municipal Corporation Act, the zones should have been formed within 30 days of election of Speaker. But the process has already been delayed which is violation of the Act,” he said. Notably, the new Speaker was elected in the RMC on January 12.
The BJP corporators alleged that the Mayor was playing politics by deliberately delaying the zone formation process.
The BJP corporators pointed out that neither the Mayor nor the Commissioner called upon an introductory meeting of the corporators. “A number of corporators are new in RMC and they did not know whom to approach regarding development works of their respective wards. By knowing each other, we can have better coordination,” said Tiwari.
The BJP corporators also demanded from the Commissioner to provide all the information regarding development works, schemes, etc to the corporators. “If the corporators will have a list of BPL cardholders, information about Antyodaya scheme, various pension cases and schemes and phone numbers of entire RMC officials and employees then it would be easy for them to develop their wards in an organised manner,” said Tiwari.
The BJP corporators also demanded from the Commissioner to restart the Bhagirathi tap water scheme. The government had launched this state-wide scheme with an aim to provide tap water connection to the families living in the slum areas. The connection will be given on the name of female member of the beneficiary family. However, the scheme could not be continued after the civic polls as the new Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak said that it was not a profitable project. The cost of the project in the capital is Rs eight crore which would be completely incurred by the state government. According to Nayak, the government had given only Rs one crore and would release the remaining amount only after the completion of the project which was an added burden on RMC that had acute fund crisis.

I will demand 33% women reservation in PCC: Patel
Raipur, February 18:, 2010
The new working president of Pradesh Mahila Congress (PMC) Kalpana Patel thinks that the PCC should have more women representatives. “I will demand at least 33 percent women reservation in PCCs in the upcoming All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) meeting,” she said while talking to Central Chronicle after getting responsibility of PMC working president on Wednesday.
Patel, who will leave for New Delhi on February 24 to attend the AIMC meeting, informed that the AICC supremo Sonia Gandhi is also likely to address all the presidents and working presidents of PMCs.
When asked about her future action plan regarding PMC, Patel said, “It will be based on the guidelines given by the AIMC chief Prabha Thakur.”
When pointed out that the state PMC has weakened in the recent past, she said, “It is unfair to say that the PMC is not strong in the state. In fact, women leaders have played key role in the recently held civic polls owing to which the two prestigious municipal corporations Raipur and Bilaspur have mayors from Mahila Congress.”
However, Patel felt that the PMC needed expansion, especially in rural belts. “Already, participation of women in panchayat polls have increased owing to reservation and I would certainly like to join the women representatives from rural pockets to consolidate the PMC from ground-level,” she said.
When asked how would she work towards the upliftment of women from poor section who do not get benefit of the schemes launched for them by the state and Union governments owing to corruption, she said, “We will create awareness among the women across the state. For this, we will take help of Aanganbadi centres and mitanins which work at ground level and are concepts of Union government. However, first we would have to ensure that the Aanganbadi centres and the mitanins work in coordination. Then only the awareness campaign will reach to the women dwelling in the remote areas.”
Woman prez can handle PCC more efficiently: Kalpana Patel
Raipur, February 18:, 2010
On chances of women president in PCC, the PMC’s new working president Kalpana Patel said, “It is possible. We have strong experienced women leaders who are capable to become PCC chief.”
Asked when the male PCC presidents in the past have failed to unite various camps of the party how would a women chief do miracle Patel said, “I am sure a woman president would handle the difficult situation more tactfully. You can see how Congress regained its strength in Uttar Pradesh under the leadership of UPCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi. In Chhattisgarh, too, a woman president can hold the responsibility equally efficiently.”
