Considering the additional financial burden incurred by the farmers owing to continuous price rise in the recent past, the Agriculture Minister Chandrashekhar Sahu has demanded from the Union government to provide diesel to the farmers at subsidised rates so that they could make optimum use of diesel based equipments including pumps to get better production.
Sahu wrote a letter to the Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in this regard. He also demanded from the Centre to link farm related works with Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) considering acute labour problem in the agriculture sector.
In his letter, Sahu said the inflation across the country has directly affected the farmers. The price rise has proportionately increased the agricultural production cost, farm equipments have become expensive and growing labour crisis has forced the farmers to give up the profession and to start some other business, he said.
In this backdrop, the farmers are using modern agricultural equipments in abundance as both state and Union governments provide grant on purchase of such equipments, but a majority of these equipments are either diesel or petrol based, he said. Since the fuel prices have increased relentlessly in the recent years, the farmers are in dilemma whether to stick to farming or move to some other profitable business, he added.
Sahu said the Centre should give subsidy in diesel to the farmers so that they may not incur production loss. Similarly, the Centre should identify farm related works that require sufficient field labourers and must link such works with NREGS as agriculture sector is facing acute shortage of labourers, he said.
