The membership campaign of Congress will commence from Friday. Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise Arun Yadav and Lok Sabha member GK Vivekanand will arrive in the capital tomorrow morning from New Delhi to launch the 28-day membership drive that will conclude next month on February 18. With the commencement of this drive, the executive body of the Youth Congress (YC) will itself dissolve.
On Friday morning at 11 am, Yadav and Vivekanand will release membership book at Congress Bhawan. Later, Yadav will take meeting of YC workers and provide them the details of the election programme. On the occasion, he will also distribute membership books to YC’s district presidents. The membership fee will be Rs 15 and Rs 5 for general and reserved categories respectively.
After successfully conducting elections for National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the party aims to conduct the YC polls democratically. The YC national president Ashok Tanwar had recently announced complete schedule of elections.
The three-month YC election would be conducted in four phases – at gram panchayat, ward, Vidhan Sabha and state level. At gram panchayat and ward levels, the polls for panchayat and ward committees would be conducted respectively and one president, one vice-president and three general secretaries would be elected for each committee.
Similarly, a committee would be constituted at Vidhan Sabha level for which one president, one vice president, eight general secretaries (five general and three reserved) and ten representatives would be elected. While, for state level polls, Lok Sabha and state committees will be constituted.
A number of aspirants have emerged for the post of state YC president and they are expected to intensify their poll-related activities to increase their supports with the commencement of membership drive. To become state YC chief, one has to get support from maximum number of elected members.
